The lyrics to “Blessed Assurance” were written in 1873 by Fanny Crosby, a blind American missionary, poet, and composer. She is one of the most famous hymn and gospel song writers ever. This beautiful song has the ability to bring calm and peacefulness in the midst of the storms of life.

Fanny Crosby wrote over 8,000 songs. The music to her lyrics was composed by Phoebe Knapp. The very fact that Fanny Crosby accomplished so much in her lifetime, even though she had a major disability, exemplifies her character as one of great determination and great faith. She died at age 95.
“Blessed Assurance” is one of the most popular hymns ever written because of its uplifting words. Fanny Crosby was (and continues to be) an inspiration to many, especially to those who face great trials and tribulations in their lives. The words “blessed assurance” reminds us that, as children of God, Jesus is with us no matter what we go through. During the most trying of times, we need to remember that we have a Savior who died on a cross for us. He shed his blood as a sacrifice to God for OUR sins, not his. Not only that, Jesus sent his Holy Spirit to live within us until we finally get to see Jesus face-to-face in heaven.

I know that every time I hear this song, I feel an inexpressible sense of both joy and peace. Sometimes this song brings tears to my eyes. I am reminded of how very deeply God the Father loves us. He sent his only Son to die for us, even though none of us deserve that sacrifice.
I am also reminded of all that Jesus himself went through in his incarnation as a man, simply out of love for us. He was criticized, jeered at, plotted against, falsely accused, humiliated, mocked, beaten, and crucified. Crucifixion is considered one of the cruelest forms of execution ever invented. If you don’t know anything about crucifixion, please do some research. It wasn’t until I read the sickening details of crucifixion that I truly understood how badly Jesus suffered for us before he died.

I believe that if we do as Fanny Crosby suggests – to watch and wait for Jesus, to be allowed to be “filled with his goodness” and “lost in his love,” the things of this world will not seem so important. Like Fanny Crosby, I greatly delight that “Jesus is mine!”
There are numerous musical versions of “Blessed Assurance.” Third Day is one of my favorite Christians groups. I do not believe I have ever heard a song from this band that I did not enjoy. Hopefully, you will enjoy watching and listening to their rendition of “Blessed Assurance.” Then, please take time to read through the lyrics which follow the video. Take time to really think about the implications of each line.
I thank God for giving this world talented, godly musicians. Music truly is good for the soul.

"Blessed Assurance"
Third Day
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
Refrain
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
I hope that this song brings as much peace and joy to you as it does to me!
