I have decided that Christian music is good for the soul. Even when I struggled most in life, listening to Christian music would keep the connection open with God. There have been a few times in my life that I have walked away from him, but I knew he was always there, waiting patiently for me. Even when my mind felt numb, the lyrics to Christian music would somehow bring relief, even if it was temporary.
I believe the more you listen to Christian music, the more you can feel God moving in you (if you are a Christian). Even if you are not currently a believer, listening to the music can spark some deep need within you that makes you want to know God personally. You just never know; you may not currently know God, but he definitely knows you! He has a plan for you, and even at this moment as you are reading this, he is moving in your heart and soul.
If you have read my first article, “My Story – From Despair to Joy and Peace,” then you know that I have struggled much in the past with depression, loneliness, and other issues, even though I was a Christian. The good news of my story is that God used my brokenness to help me to realize that he is the ONLY answer. I feel myself transforming daily into more and more of the woman he wants me to be. I am so very blessed to be able to share my story and what God has shown me.
Because listening to music has blessed me so much in so many ways, I have decided to share five Youtube videos a week for your listening pleasure.
Walking Is Good for the Body and the Soul
I try to spend about an hour walking at least five days a week. Walking is not only good for your body, but it is good for your mental health. There is just something about being outside, especially if you are fortunate enough to be in a place resplendent with the beauty of nature. Even if you are in the middle of the city, however, just look up at the sky and think about how God is up there high above looking down upon you.
Benefits of Listening to Contemporary Christian Music
I love walking, but even more, I love walking and listening to contemporary Christian music. On these summer mornings of late, I put on my sunscreen, my ball cap, and my sunglasses, and then I get out my cell phone and listening buds and turn on my music. My personal choice for digital music is Pandora. I select “Christian Contemporary” from the playlist choices and then I am off and walking. When it’s really hot or my legs are screaming “Enough!” the distraction of music makes the walk seem to go faster. However, on a beautiful day when it is neither too hot nor too cold, I can walk for long lengths of time when I am listening to encouraging music.
Until I started walking, I really didn’t listen to music very much. When I was in my car, I would listen to a local Christian radio station, but there was always so much talking, especially when I was driving to work in the mornings. Like many people, I just don’t like to hear people talking early in the morning. I was also too busy reading or watching TV during my leisure time to turn on music. But I have found that listening to Christian music has really blessed me. Musical themes are as varied as all the different emotions we feel.
Another benefit of listening to Christian music is that I have learned that there are lots of people who experience the same kinds of things I do: doubt and insecurity, loneliness, struggles with guilt and shame, love, the ups and downs of relationships, joy, encouragement, praise, and thanksgiving. Some days I feel grouchy and tired; other days I feel like I could climb a mountain (which I couldn’t, just to be honest). People who have been given the God-given talent to write/perform lyrics and music are just every day people like you and me They have their good days and their bad days. Sometimes life is great, and sometimes it is really difficult. Songwriters and singers deal with the same kinds of issues that the rest of us do, including problems with self-esteem, broken relationships, addictions to things that help to comfort us (such as food) or help us forget (such as drugs and alcohol).
The book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible makes the point that nothing man has ever done or ever felt is new. All of the these things are part of mankind.
“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”Ecclesiastes 1:9
Listening to Christian songs reminds me that we are not alone in our suffering and pain. Many others suffer the same things or worse. Even more importantly, we are reminded that we have a Savior who experienced criticism, humiliation, mocking, sadness, temptation, rejection, and ultimately, a very painful death. Jesus knows how we feel, and he desires to comfort us through the working of the Holy Spirit within us. Here are some Bible verses which can give you comfort knowing that Jesus is always with you:
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”Isaiah 43:2
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.Psalm 23:4
There is just something very reassuring about listening to songs that you feel that you could have written yourself. Being able to identify with others helps us to feel less lonely and more connected with others. Even better, listening to songs that sing about God’s greatness, love, mercy, grace and kindness -and all of of his other awesome characteristics – just brings comfort to the soul, both during trials and tribulations and also at times of joy and happiness.
